Daily report Castelo task 5

Back to "World Cup Castelo, Brazil 2023"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop

An 85 km route was set. Today's task got off to a slow start with pretty weak conditions but a reasonably high base. People launching late needed to hurry or found themselves unable to get in a good position for the start.

On the way to the first turn point the pilots discovered that the day was improving and found some good thermals. As the pilots tagged the first waypoint and turned 180 degrees, the rhythm sped up.

After the second turn point and another 180 degree turn, the pilots got low for the first time and took time to climb in some slowish thermals. The pilots then passed over to the west side of Castelo, passing over some industrial areas before reconnecting with proper lift.

They then had a long leg southwest to the last turn point before ESS. There were lots of route choices in this part of the course allowing some pilots to get ahead and high. As they approached the last turn point the lift was scarce, and regrouping happened over the river, after which the tactical game to ESS started.

One group went over the mountains on the right and got to goal first, another group took a slightly slower route over the flats. Lift was generous on the final glide so they all arrived in goal sky high.

All in all, a great race in loving memory of Dan Morand.

The first 99 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed points and lead out points.
