La Réunion is a French island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 200 km (120 mi) southwest of Mauritius, the nearest island. The island is 63 km (39 mi) long; 45 km (28 mi) wide. The highest peak on the island is the Piton de la Fournaise, a shield volcano on the eastern end of Réunion Island. It rises more than 2,631 m (8,632 ft) above sea level and is sometimes called a sister to Hawaiian volcanoes because of the similarity of climate and volcanic nature. The climate in Réunion is tropical, but temperature moderates with elevation. The weather is cool and dry from May to November, and hot and rainy from November to April. Precipitation levels vary greatly within the island, with the east being much wetter than the west. The best flying conditions are in September -October. Generally in this season the thermal are between 2 and 3 m/s, and the cloud base close to 1200 m sometimes it can be almost 2000 m. There are two main flying zones on Reunion - Saint Leu and Bellemène:
Take off Colimacons - 750 m ASL GPS : 21° 7’52.65″S / 55°18’13.45″E It is situated not far form Saint Leu. It is the place where you have lots of people flying, because it is protected form the wind most time of the year.
Landing is in Kelonia, on the beach. GPS: 21° 9’8.62″S / 55°16’44.04″E
Take off Bellemène: - 730 m ASL GPS : 21° 1’20.52″S / 55°19’19.12″E It is located near Saint-Paul. This is the take off to be selected when you have wind in Saint Leu. It takes 30 minutes to get there by car from Saint Leu.
Landing at ferme Camarons : 20°59’24.03″S / 55°18’9.49″E
