"World Cup Switzerland 2020 ::: Disentis"
With Foehn wind forecast a short 55 km task was set in the Disentis valley.
The start gate gave stunning views of the Oberalpstock peak and the Brunni Glacier. Michael Küffer said quite simply, ‘It was one of the most beautiful flights I’ve ever had.’
Some stuck to the mountains, others to the pine covered slopes on the sides of the Disentis valley. In general, the conditions were smooth and lifty all the way round. Fortunately, the strong winds that had been feared didn’t materialise.
It was a fast and furious race with the first fifty making goal within five minutes of each other!
Honorin Hamard summed up the pace of the day: I am so glad that I didn’t have a heart rate monitor on me, it would have exploded!
And a final Thought for the Thermal. After winning yesterday’s task, an anonymous pilot told us, ‘Today I made a typical beginner’s mistake. After a victory yesterday, I was too keen and enthusiastic and bombed out 1.3km from goal. Today shows, that after 22 task wins, I still have a lot to learn.’ So, in the words of one of our best loved Sky Gods, Paragliding World Cups are a great way to learn, and to keep on learning.
The average speed of the fastest pilots round the course was a staggering 41.6 km/h.
The first 100 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed/time points and lead out points.
