Paragliding World Cup Brasov, Romania, 24th June to 1st of July 2023

Back to "World Cup Sacele - Brasov, Romania 2023"
At the end of this month the World Cup will be making its way to Brasov in Romania for our first ever event there.

Brasov is in Transylvania, in the heart of Romania, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. It is one of the oldest cities in the country. Already known for skiing and hiking, its reputation as a “gateway” to the big mountains for paragliding is on the up.

In the mountains pilots can expect to find the occasional +7m/s climb, more generally thermals are around 3-5m/s, with some valley breeze.

There is a great variety of flying. Away from the mountains the pilots will be able to enjoy the fertile flat lands surrounded by tree covered hills. Thermals here are on average 1-2m/s, with low saves being in short supply!

This combination of landscapes and thermals will offer an interesting playground for the pilots, who will have to sharpen their senses to know when it’s time to change down a gear.

It is also hoped that tasks will take the pilots over Bran Castle, better known as Dracula’s Castle.

Equally interesting are the colourful collection of pilots taking part. Ex World champion and World Cup winner, Joachim Oberhauser will be competing alongside five other Paragliding World Cup winners.

We will be welcoming 23 new pilots, including Jacob Butterworth, who will be flying alongside (or perhaps slightly ahead of) his dad Richard.

A first in paragliding history, we will be celebrating Pepe Malecki’s 100th World Cup, here in Romania. He will be the first pilot ever to achieve this!

Follow the action on the Flymaster tracking and the World Cup Webapp (live.pwca.org) and website (pwca.org). The leaderboard now has live scoring. The commentary will be in: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and Korean.

The split screen facility permits any combination of leaderboard, tracking and commentary. With the return of our Brazilian partner VETOR, the team leaderboard will display 22 teams, all vying for the top spot!

We have also recently introduced the maillot jaune (overall race leader), maillot vert (leadout point leader) and maillot rose (leading lady) on the tracking and in the air.
