Task 3 - Krushevo 2022

Back to "World Cup Krushevo, Macedonia 2022"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop

The conditions today were windier and colder than on previous days.

An 84km task was set with a short leg north, then a long downwind leg using both sides of the valley.

It was a bit more stable than on previous days. The thermals were spaced far apart. But, working together in big groups, the pilots were efficient at finding thermals.

The pilots had views of stunning scenery, flying south over the patchwork of sunflower, corn and tobacco fields, whilst looking into the mountains on either side of the plain.

After the second turn point Baptiste pulled ahead, got high, scooped up all the lead out points and then was in a perfect position to dominate the lead gaggle and arrive in goal just ahead and with an unbeatable leadout point advantage.

In Baptiste’s own words, ‘Today I wanted to fly in control, but when a very good opportunity presented itself (I was 300m above the group at the second turn point) I couldn't resist, and I attacked. I got ahead but ended up low. With a lot of patience, I managed to get back up and joined the group in a good position and was able to finish in first place with a lead of eight seconds.’

Another great task, the fastest so far in the competition.

The first 97 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed points and lead out points.
