Task 1 - Krushevo 2022

Back to "World Cup Krushevo, Macedonia 2022"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop

With light northeast winds and a totally blue sky, a 94km route was set for task one of Krushevo 2022.

The route took the pilots on a tour of the flats in front of launch and was a perfect introduction to Macedonia’s flying Mecca.

Some chose to take the direct route out over the flats. Others went into the hills on the other side of the valley and tagged turnpoint two first.

Unfortunately, those who led out were too conservative and thanks to a big convergence line they were caught up by the big group behind about sixty per cent of the way round the course.

After tagging the most southerly turn point, they then had an into wind leg across the flats, which was windier than expected. This brought the whole field together, thus the first seventy arrived in goal within three minutes of each other!

It was an interesting task where the thermals were sometimes rare and often well-spaced out, but often with good convergence lines. It was difficult to find a thermal on your own so there was a lot of playing it safe and staying with the gaggle.

Kirsty Cameron summed up the day for many, ‘It is just so nice to be back in Krushevo, my favourite place.’

The first 103 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed points and lead out points.
