"World Cup Gochang, South Korea 2022"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop
A 61km task was set with one turn point, taking the pilots north then a long leg southwest.
Today was bipolar. It started off clear and perfect with blue skies and cumulous. Then the sky covered over with thick dark cloud and closed in within five minutes.
It re opened and closed again quite a few times. The sky would open up, the pilots would leave, go on a glide, and were able to climb in what felt like darkness as the thermals were already there. Brett HAZLETT recounted that at times it felt like flying in the moon light.
For the first two thirds of the course there were light winds, then 20km from goal the wind increased and became a strong 20km/h cross wind, along with total cloud cover which killed off most of the cumulous clouds. This disrupted the cycles and meant that they were in and out of lift and not able to climb in it. This put most of the pilots on the ground. This cross wind made it difficult for the leaders to progress in the right direction.
Sadly, the leaders landed with less than one kilometre to go to the end of speed.
Those who won the day were the pilots with a combination of good distance points and lead out points. As nobody got to goal, there were no time points.
