Task 2 Gochang 2022

Back to "World Cup Gochang, South Korea 2022"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop

With much clearer skies today an 80 km task south-east via two large turn points was set.

It worked really well from the beginning. It was a very technical day with lots of cycles. The pilots really had to choose their moment to push. There was lots of decision making about when to stop and climb, when to leave climbs as they got weak. It was important not to get distracted and leave your own climb for what looked to be a better one only to miss the cycle or arrive too low.

There were lots of different route opportunities, with different clouds to chose from. Though in the flat section in the middle of the race the pilots had blue skies before rejoining the mountains again for the end of the task. Interestingly there were no terrible gliding lines, just decent lines and even better lines, sometimes extended lines of lift especially in the flats.

The wind was perfect for paragliding, super light.

It was a day for staying high and being as efficient as possible hopping from mountain to mountain.

There were gaggles of birds to follow. The scenery was stunning with cold, clear air affording great views of the ocean. Yellow rice terraces filled the flats between the big mountains.

Experienced Germanic Korean pilot Torsten Siegel summed the day up for foreigners and locals alike, ‘that was the nicest cross-country flight I have ever had in Korea!’

The first 81 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed points and lead out points.

In the team competition the top two pilots in each team are scored and the second one gives the ranking. The highest placed second team pilot was Torsten Siegel flying for team Gin.
