"World Cup Clopotiva, Romania 2022"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop
Today dawned another lovely sunny day. With clouds in the mountains an 88km task north out to a turn point in the flats was set.
The task got off to a great start with big thermals and everyone racing together across blue skies to Hateg. At Hateg they divided into those playing it safe and staying high and the young(ish) guns pushing ahead lower. The wind was southeast high up and from the east low down.
At the first turn point they all came together again and climbed out.
Coming back there was a bit more northeast.
Once they got to the lakes a gaggle pulled away: Adrien Raisson, Julien Garcia, Justin Puthod, Øyvind Antila, Damien LACAZE and Huseyin Tanriverdi. 22-year-old Justin knew that he could afford do discard today, so he was keen to push on. They spotted a patch of sunshine with a cloud above it. From then on, the race to goal was on. Sadly, a big rain cloud got there first and the task had to be stopped as the pilots got to Clopotiva.
In the end, the pilots behind those going for goal, and who had taken a lot more height, were awarded better distances as the final scores took their higher altitude into account.
In summary, today was a great day out, until it wasn’t.
Those who won the day were the pilots with a combination of good distance points and lead out points. As nobody got to goal, there were no time points.
