With sunshine and lots of smiles an 86 km task was set.
Today’s course took the pilots round the volcano into the wind shadow where it was more sheltered, and the thermals were better.
Great task setting took the pilots west, then south, out into the flats. They had a cross wind, then the wind behind them to goal.
Just before goal, Yassen Savov pulled the lead gaggle away from the rest, to the left.
However, those who held back climbed higher and got a liftier line, led by Hadi Heidari, who was first across end of speed today.
Lots of high fives and happy pilots in goal. For Gavin McClurg it was a day that just got better and better. For task setter Pepe Malecki it was much faster than expected, good wide thermals, easy to stay in the lift with a nice tail wind.
For Pal Takats with spectacular views of the volcano at the start gate today’s task alone, made it worth coming here.
More of the same tomorrow please, although a few pilots have requested a disclaimer be attached to the back of Yassen Savov’s wing, ‘Follow this pilot at your own risk.’
The first 99 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed points and lead out points.
Top 3 speed point winners – the fastest pilots round the course:
1:53:26 Hadi HEIDARI flying at an average speed of 42.6km/h
