"12th World Cup Superfinal ::: Mexico (Valle de Bravo)"
Summary written by Ruth Jessop
First lady, Violeta Jimenez, summed up today’s 118 km task:
I think we’re all still recovering from Manuel Quintanilla’s fever dream of a task today. Was the course a nautilus? A cat’s cradle? Anyway, the way to do it turned out to be to use the convergence as a launchpad and dart out to make the turnpoints. We had everything from sunny bubbles at the start to an ominously tall cloudbank at the Mesa… and then an incredibly buoyant line through the convergence to the final turnpoint, where none of us turned for almost 10k. We all hit end of speed and then shared a slow, polite thermal over Cerro Gordo that pushed us on our way to a beautiful goal at the lake. My hands almost froze on my B handles at one point, but I guess those nerve endings are a fair trade for a finish like today’s!
The first 83 pilots made goal, and thus all flew the same distance, and gained the same distance points. Today’s winner is therefore the one with a combination of the best speed points and lead out points.
